Study VS Revision

The difference between Study VS Revision is very simple

Let me explain …

I will warn you in advance for the blog, that I get quite passionate when it comes to revision advice.

I won’t apologise for my revision passion, mainly because my students love it and when I’m talking about revision I love it!

Today’s blog is on a coaching topic that is a fundamental aspect of a successful exam journey. And I think it’s often overlooked.

I want to help you be laser focused on what you are doing, why and then how!

Big difference between study & revision

Okay, let’s get into the detail.

When I talk about study or revision it’s because there is a big difference!

They are NOT the same thing!

Each phase deserves and needs a different perspective, focus and thought process – to get the best out of that phase – agree?!

Let me explain…

Study is learning

And

Revision is practicing

Each phase has distinct tasks, actions and perspectives. It’s really important to me that we focus on the differences so that when you see the difference, you will get a ? Lightbulb ? moment.

Then with that ? comes clarity, focus and success.

The difference between study and revision is as simple as knowing my two key words.

Learn

Learning is where you focus on developing and learning the knowledge.

Practice

Practicing is where you repeat exam techniques in order to be able to recall the knowledge.

Yes it’s simple when I say it outloud – right?! But I know you guys often mix the two, or focus ‘too much’ on the learn phase, which is why I am here to change that.

Change that so that you practice for longer, because practice is where you will actually pass the exam. The revision phase is actually where you will learn and practice the exam techniques and tactics in order to actually answer the exam questions.

Why am I specifying the difference?

Mainly so that you get a revision transformation!

I give Revision Tips every day over on Linkedin and this blog is no different, except this revision tip is about how to structure your whole exam – perspective is number one!

Then number two comes tactics.

Once you know and realise the difference between study vs revision you will be able to realign the way you study, which means you will be able to embrace your revision phase and make it count.

Black and white kind of girl

Yep, if you don’t know me by now, then let me remind you about my black and white personality.

I’m a typical accountant, I’ve done lots of personality test over the years and I really love them! I’ll do a separate blog about them one day, cos that will make you laugh.

My logical and practical thinking mind is often mis understood by non accountants. And even within my finance career I have been told I am ‘too black and white’ – cos I think there is a right or a wrong answer for example – how can there be any ‘grey’ inbetween?! ?

Explaining the difference between study vs revision is a very black and white piece of coaching advice of mine. But it works and it’s so powerful.

When I am in coaching mode, I over use the word ‘laser focused’ and it’s because once you are laser focused, you have the ability to turn down the emotions (esp overwhelm, panic and lack of confidence) and turn up the volume on structure, motivation and determination.

Being laser focused during your study phase means you should be focused on learn, learn, learn. Learning the knowledge, learning what the formula, learning how to apply it to a scenario or company.

Then in the revision phase you are laser focused on practice, practice, practice. Practising how to re-engineer that knowledge in order to answer an exam question, practicing recalling that formula, practicing time management skills, practicing selecting the right answer, practicing what Mr ACCA or Mr ACCA actually wants you to write about.

So many practicing actions to do … can you see why I’m specifically a revision coach now?!?

Direct with my coaching

And Yes I am direct when it comes to my revision coaching.

The tutors are amazing, and there are thousands of them out there to teach you the syllabus and support with your learn phase.

But when it comes to the practice phase (ie revision) – the tutors (in my experience) miss the trick and focus too much on the knowledge instead of HOW to actually practice in order to pass the exam.

I’m a Revision Coach because all I care about and coach towards is HOW to pass your exam … with confidence!

Not regurgitating the book, not knowing all the formulas but not being able to re-engineer them, and defo not procrasti-learning!

Explain how it can benefit your revision

Okay, so by know, you know the difference between study vs revision ?

Let’s go one step further and talk about how knowing LEARN vs PRACTICE will benefit your revision.

  • It gives you a structure to focus on – instead of trying to mix learning and questions together and just going round in the wrong circles
  • You will be able to actually get to a feeling of ‘Oh I know enough knowledge now, let’s get practicing’
  • It will stop you learning in your revision phase and if you need to learn then do it through question practice – that’s the smarter way to actually pass the exam guys!

How it keeps you laser focused on the task in hand {Passing with exam confidence!}

The number ONE goal that you have is to pass your exam – right?!

I know .. the pass is the point – right?!

So can you focus on the task in hand please.

The task for your study phase is LEARN … yes I’m repeating myself, cos it’s *that* important!

The task for your revision phase is PRACTICE … practice how to pass the exam!

If and when you focus on ONE task at a time – you will feel calmer, more in control, with more confidence in the process (which in turns adds to your self confidence).

Instead of thinking ‘Oh I have so much to learn and do’ .. how about you take my coaching advice and

Focus on ONE thing at a TIME!

One phase at a time

One chapter at a time

One day at a time

Yes – slow and steady wins the race!

You wanna pass your exam … don’t ya?! ?

Yeah Helen, but can you give me the HOW?!

HOW to pass your exam?! ?

HOW to focus on each phase with success?! ?
