Why my CIMA Students work with me!
One of my favourite things about coaching I getting to know my students.
Because I’m not a tutor, with a class of 30 students all staring at me trying to learn the syllabus (aka the boring part) – I can bring out the revision fun!
Yes Revision can be fun – well with me it’s always fun!
To build a strong coaching relationship I get to know my students so that they see I’m writing a specific revision plan around them, which in turn keeps them much more motivated and focused at the task in hand: revision!
Accountability is a big part of motivation.
When my students invest in themselves and their CIMA exams, they level up their commitment.
They keep themselves accountable and I’m always focusing on check-in’s and conversations to keep them on the right positive track!
CIMA is much tougher than we realised! … No-one told me It would take me 6 years!
And no-one prepared me for the juggle between growing a successful finance career and failing exams!
I coach differently so that my students have full support (I didn’t have the support I craved when I was revising so I make sure my audience have this option!)
The way I coach is specific to my students.
I coach CIMA students at the Strategic Level – only a few exams away from qualifying!
I coach and support because I know how tough these exams are … but I also know after being qualified for 11 years – how amazing the rewards and opportunities are when you qualify and show of those letters after your name!

But today I want to share my amazing students!

I pride myself on the coaching relationships I’ve formed over the years.
Lianne is a mum to her now 2 year old. She came to me a year before her wedding to finally finish her CIMA qualification.
These are her words when she booked a discovery call with me:
Lianne and I worked on the revision focus the step up to Strategic Level entails (I’ll tell you what I mean about the CIMA Police in another blog!)
I guess I should say quite a lot of my students come to me and stay with me for Revision coaching for more than just one exam – I take that as a great sign the coaching works and the relationship we’ve built is strong too!
Lianne worked hard around her family and work commitments, she went back to work and was planning her wedding as we were revising!
To make revision work for Lianne we created a revision plan bespoke to her, so that she felt strong and motivated to achieve it (and that I knew it was the right revision for what she needed)
Lianne passed her Strategic Case Study exam last year with 93 marks!
This is what she wrote to me on results day:
Coaching you guys to get your CIMA qualification lights up my soul!
Leona is one of my longest students.
We started with her hardest exam (F2) – which she failed 4 times herself, before reaching out for some Helen coaching.
Having failed 4 times, Leona lacked confidence and motivation.
Like me she works super hard, but the hard work se was putting into F2 just wasn’t working for her and I taught her a new way!
A new way to revise, new words to tell herself (to boost her confidence) and a new revision plan full of motivational ways to revise (not just re-reading the study text!)
After her F2 pass … we cracked on with her Management Case Study exam – which she passed 1st time!
She was in shock she passed it 1st time because she sat OCS a few times so she had convinced herself she was rubbish at exam (which she was not by the way!)
Then comes the jump to Strategic Level, which with a new job caused some emotions to rear their head. But I was not going to let her give up (or procrastinate!)
If you ask her, she’ll tell you how politely tough I was on her and I messaged her to perk her up and give her a short revision task to get on with!
Leona has a little daughter and as a single parent had life and work juggles of her own.
Which with the support and focus of coaching enabled her to have a revision journey that fitted in with her needs.
Having coached her for so long I knew what worked and what didn’t! So I made it my job to keep her focused and emotionally supported (yes there were tears during our calls)
But those tears made her stronger and stronger!
Leona qualified with her CIMA letters a few months ago and is now thriving with her job and free of the black cloud she often referred to her CIMA qualification holding over her.
I could share so many of Leona’s wins – but I’ll leave my favourite one here – on her SCS Results day!
I don’t just coach mums by the way!
Lucy was in her 20’s, on a graduate scheme and just moved in with her boyfriend.
I remember the pink 70’s wall paper in the background of our zoom calls! (It’s funny what you remember isn’t it)
Lucy was a joy to work with – so determined, and hardworking. Her knowledge base and knowledge recall was excellent!
I knew I wasn’t in her life to teach her (and she had a tuition provider as part of her level 7 apprenticeship for that) … my job was to boost her confidence and give her coaching support!
Like a cheerleader and sports coach vibe!
Again, we worked on a few exams together – P3, F3 and SCS (Can you see a theme with my Strategic style coaching!)
She was a sponge – she loved to learn and develop and soaked up the techniques – each time getting more and more confident.
Without being arrogant (because so many of my students say this) – Lucy got a lot of energy and confidence during our coaching calls. Because I got to know her, focused on what she needed that week and never let her be negative!
My proudest moment was coaching Lucy through her Strategic Case Study (yes I’m biased cos it’s my fav exam ever!) but also because she got 102 marks!
Wowser!
Is it a coincidence that the 3 students in this week’s blog, names all start with an L?!
